Fun Facts About the French Croissant

Nadine Braehmer • October 22, 2024

When visiting Paris, indulging in a croissant is almost a rite of passage. This buttery, flaky pastry has become a symbol of French culture, but did you know the croissant isn’t actually French in origin? Here are some fun facts about the beloved croissant that will make you crave one on your next trip to the City of Light!

1. The Croissant’s Origins Lie in Austria
Though croissants are now quintessentially French, they trace their roots back to Vienna, Austria. The original pastry, called a “kipferl,” was created in the 13th century and is the ancestor of today’s croissant. It wasn’t until the 19th century that the recipe made its way to France, where it was perfected into the buttery, crescent-shaped pastry we know today.

2. The Shape Has a Historical Meaning
The croissant’s crescent shape has historical significance. It’s said that the shape was inspired by the Ottoman Empire's emblem. After the Ottoman Turks' failed siege of Vienna in 1683, local bakers supposedly created the crescent-shaped pastry to celebrate the victory, with the crescent symbolizing the Ottoman flag.

3. Croissants Were Once a Luxury
When croissants first appeared in France, they were considered a luxury item only the wealthy could afford. Made with real butter and fine flour, they were often reserved for special occasions and celebrations. Today, they’re an everyday staple, but their rich, buttery goodness still feels like a treat!

4. Paris Boulangeries Make the Best Croissants
While you can find croissants all over the world, nothing compares to enjoying one from a traditional Parisian boulangerie. The secret lies in the high-quality French butter, precise folding techniques, and the passion of local bakers. In fact, in Paris, there’s even an annual competition to crown the best croissant in the city!

5. There’s More Than One Type of Croissant
In Paris, you’ll encounter two types of croissants: the croissant au beurre (made with butter) and the croissant ordinaire (made with margarine). For the authentic Parisian experience, always go for the croissant au beurre. You’ll immediately taste the difference in the richness and flakiness.
