10 Fun Facts About Egypt

Nadine Braehmer • March 14, 2025

Egypt is a land of ancient wonders, vibrant culture, and delicious food. While many people know about the Great Pyramids and the Sphinx, there’s so much more to this fascinating country! Here are 10 fun facts about Egypt that will surprise and inspire you.

1. Egypt Is Home to the Only Remaining Ancient Wonder

The Great Pyramid of Giza is the last standing wonder of the ancient world. Built over 4,500 years ago, it remains one of the most mysterious and awe-inspiring structures in history.

2. The Ancient Egyptians Loved Board Games

Did you know that the ancient Egyptians were big fans of board games? One of the most popular games was called Senet, which dates back over 5,000 years. It was played by pharaohs and commoners alike and is considered one of the earliest board games in history.

3. Cairo Is the Largest City in Africa

Egypt’s capital, Cairo, is the biggest city in Africa and the Middle East. With over 20 million people, it is a bustling metropolis full of history, markets, and, of course, amazing food.

4. The Nile River Is the Longest in the World

The Nile River stretches over 6,600 kilometers (4,100 miles), making it the longest river on Earth. It has been the lifeblood of Egypt for thousands of years, providing water, transportation, and fertile land for farming.

5. Egypt Invented the First Known Pregnancy Test

Ancient Egyptians had their own version of a pregnancy test! Women would urinate on wheat and barley seeds, and if the seeds sprouted, they were believed to be pregnant. Modern science later confirmed that the test could sometimes be accurate due to hormone levels in urine affecting plant growth.

6. Cats Were Sacred Animals

The ancient Egyptians worshiped cats and considered them sacred. Many households kept cats to protect their homes from pests, and harming a cat was punishable by law. The goddess Bastet, often depicted as a cat, was associated with protection and fertility.

7. The World’s First Pyramid Was Built in Saqqara

Before the famous Great Pyramid of Giza, there was the Step Pyramid of Djoser in Saqqara. Built around 2630 BC, it was the first pyramid ever constructed and marked a major advancement in architecture.

8. Ancient Egyptians Wore Makeup – and It Had a Purpose

Both men and women in ancient Egypt wore makeup, particularly black eyeliner made from kohl. It wasn’t just for beauty—it also helped protect their eyes from the sun’s glare and had antibacterial properties.

9. Bread and Beer Were Everyday Staples

Ancient Egyptians ate a lot of bread and drank beer daily. These were essential parts of their diet, and even workers who built the pyramids were paid in bread and beer.

10. Egypt Has a Hidden Underground City

Beneath modern Cairo, there is an ancient city known as Babylon Fortress. This Roman-era city has underground structures, tunnels, and ruins, some of which are still being discovered today.
